Makapuʻu Lighthouse, Oʻahu, Hawaii - Original Mixed-Media Art on Stretched Canvas
There are places in Hawaii where the landscape seems almost too dramatic to be real. Makapuʻu is one of them.
I was drawn to the contrast of this small white lighthouse perched against the rugged volcanic cliffs, surrounded by an enormous expanse of ocean and sky. From this vantage point, the lighthouse feels almost miniature, a quiet human presence in a landscape that is anything but small.
In creating this piece, I wanted to amplify that sense of scale and the extraordinary color of the Hawaiian coast. Deep cobalt and turquoise move through the water, warm golds and ochres define the rocks, and the sky seems to open endlessly above it all. The clouds are intentionally expressive, carrying light and movement across the painting and reflecting back into the ocean below.
What I love most about this scene is the way the lighthouse holds its place within all that vastness. It doesn't dominate the landscape. It belongs to it. Small, bright, and steadfast against the dark cliffs, it becomes a quiet point of focus amid the movement of sea, stone, light, and sky.
Makapuʻu Lighthouse is a Contemporary Impressionist work created from my original photography and shaped through color, texture, light, and abstraction to express not simply what I saw there, but what made me stop and look.
This piece of art is a hand-embellished, variable open edition canvas that is personally completed by the artist.
