Waiʻoli Huiʻia Church, The Heart of Haleleʻa - Original Mixed-Media Art on Stretched Canvas
Waiʻoli Huiʻia Church, The Heart of Haleleʻa
There are certain places in Hawaiʻi that seem to belong completely to their surroundings, and Waiʻoli Huiʻia Church in Hanalei is one of them. Its distinctive green bell tower rises through palms and tropical vegetation, and the Gothic windows and shingled architecture give it a character that feels both historic and unmistakably at home on Kauaʻi.”
What captured my attention on this particular day was the light. The afternoon sun seemed to ignite the palms surrounding the church, turning their greens to brilliant shades of yellow and gold against an intensely blue Hawaiian sky. The open wooden doors caught that same warmth, while just beyond them, the interior fell into shadows and the colors of the stained glass could still be seen.
In creating this piece, I wanted to heighten that contrast between light and shadow, the cool greens of the church and the warmth of the sun, and the strong architectural lines of the bell tower against the movement and abundance of the tropical foliage. I pushed the color and texture to express not simply what the church looked like, but what it felt like to stand there, soaking in the light and texture of the place.
Waiʻoli Huiʻia has been part of the Hanalei community for generations, with roots reaching back to the establishment of the Waiʻoli Mission in 1834. Known as The Heart of Haleleʻa, it remains a place of worship and a beautiful reminder of the history woven into this extraordinary part of the island.
This artwork is offered as a variable open edition canvas, individually hand-embellished and completed by the artist.
