Patio en Barcelona

While my wife and I were staying in Barcelona, I awoke early one morning to this quiet scene just outside our room. She was still sleeping, and for a moment I considered waking her because I wanted her to experience what I was seeing.

Instead, I let her sleep and reached for my camera.

There was something beautiful about the stillness of the patio at that hour. The morning light filtered through the foliage and fell across the patterned tile, illuminating the warm yellow wall, terracotta pots, and two empty chairs waiting beside a small table. Everything felt peaceful, intimate, and wonderfully removed from the activity of the city beyond.

I photographed the scene because I wanted to hold on to that moment and, in some way, share it with her later. In creating Patio en Barcelona, I pushed the warmth of the sunlight, the richness of the surrounding greenery, and the contrast of the cool blue chairs against the golden wall to express what that early morning felt like to me.

My wife slept through the original moment, but now she, and others, can experience a little of what I saw and felt that quiet morning in Barcelona.

There are places in Hawaii where the landscape seems almost too dramatic to be real. Makapuʻu is one of them.

I was drawn to the contrast of this small white lighthouse perched against the rugged volcanic cliffs, surrounded by an enormous expanse of ocean and sky. From this vantage point, the lighthouse feels almost miniature, a quiet human presence in a landscape that is anything but small.

In creating this piece, I wanted to amplify that sense of scale and the extraordinary color of the Hawaiian coast. Deep cobalt and turquoise move through the water, warm golds and ochres define the rocks, and the sky seems to open endlessly above it all. The clouds are intentionally expressive, carrying light and movement across the painting and reflecting back into the ocean below.

What I love most about this scene is the way the lighthouse holds its place within all that vastness. It doesn't dominate the landscape. It belongs to it. Small, bright, and steadfast against the dark cliffs, it becomes a quiet point of focus amid the movement of sea, stone, light, and sky.

Makapuʻu Lighthouse is a Contemporary Impressionist work created from my original photography and shaped through color, texture, light, and abstraction to express not simply what I saw there, but what made me stop and look.

This piece of art is a hand-embellished, variable open edition canvas that is personally completed by the artist.

Waiʻoli Huiʻia Church, The Heart of Haleleʻa

There are certain places in Hawaiʻi that seem to belong completely to their surroundings, and Waiʻoli Huiʻia Church in Hanalei is one of them. Its distinctive green bell tower rises through palms and tropical vegetation, and the Gothic windows and shingled architecture give it a character that feels both historic and unmistakably at home on Kauaʻi.”

What captured my attention on this particular day was the light. The afternoon sun seemed to ignite the palms surrounding the church, turning their greens to brilliant shades of yellow and gold against an intensely blue Hawaiian sky. The open wooden doors caught that same warmth, while just beyond them, the interior fell into shadows and the colors of the stained glass could still be seen.

In creating this piece, I wanted to heighten that contrast between light and shadow, the cool greens of the church and the warmth of the sun, and the strong architectural lines of the bell tower against the movement and abundance of the tropical foliage. I pushed the color and texture to express not simply what the church looked like, but what it felt like to stand there, soaking in the light and texture of the place.

Waiʻoli Huiʻia has been part of the Hanalei community for generations, with roots reaching back to the establishment of the Waiʻoli Mission in 1834. Known as The Heart of Haleleʻa, it remains a place of worship and a beautiful reminder of the history woven into this extraordinary part of the island.

Belle at the Beach

My wife has long been my muse, and some of my favorite images of her have come from ordinary moments when she wasn’t posing for a portrait. Belle at the Beach began with a photograph I took of her during a day at the beach, her hair swept up, the sun on her face, and the colors of the water and sand surrounding her.

I’ve always admired the Impressionists, particularly artists like Claude Monet, and their ability to capture not simply what a scene looked like, but how the light, color, and atmosphere made it feel. This painting is, in part, my own small tribute to that tradition.

As I worked, I allowed the details of the beach to loosen and dissolve into broad passages of color and texture. The blues of the water and sky, the warmth of the sand, and the sunlight across her skin become less about defining a particular place and more about capturing the brightness and freedom of being there.

### Hospital Sant Pau, Barcelona, Spain

- Image: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0674/8933/3456/files/HospitalSantPausmall.png (copyrighted artwork, do not republish)

Hospital Sant Pau is one of Barcelona’s architectural treasures. What caught my attention wasn’t the grandeur of the historic complex, but the endless, smaller, more intimate views.

I was drawn to the way the flowers and landscaping envelop each building of this incredible campus, allowing only glimpses of the warm stonework and beautiful windows to emerge through the garden. I photographed this particular view and later painted the brilliant blues of the flowers to echo the color of the sky and glass. The sunlit architecture provided a warm contrast to the cool blues and deep greens surrounding it.

In creating this piece, I wanted the flowers to command the foreground rather than simply frame the architecture. They become the way we discover the building, drawing the eye through layers of color and texture until the details of Sant Pau gradually reveal themselves.

For me, this painting is less about documenting a famous Barcelona landmark and more about capturing a quiet moment within it, when architecture, vegetation, color, and light seemed to become part of the same composition.

Cinque Terre, Italy captures a view that immediately drew me in when I visited this remarkable stretch of the Italian coast. I loved the colorful buildings climbing the hillside, the church standing prominently near the water, and the small boats gathered in the harbor below.

The water was especially striking. Its deep Mediterranean greens and blues created a beautiful contrast against the warm yellows, oranges, and reds of the village. The boats in the foreground caught those same colors, while the sunlight brought out the texture and character of the buildings and surrounding hills.

As I worked on the painting, I heightened the color, light, and texture to express what I saw and felt when looking at the scene. I wanted the water to have movement and depth, the hillside to feel rugged and layered, and the village to retain the warmth and character that first caught my attention.

Cinque Terre, Italy captures what made me stop and look in the first place: the remarkable combination of color, water, architecture, and landscape along the Italian coast.

Duomo di Firenze

The Cathedral of Florence, officially the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, in Florence, Italy.

Standing beneath Florence’s Duomo, it is almost impossible to take it all in at once. The building rises above you in layer after layer of arches, windows, carved details, and patterned marble, each competing for your attention while somehow remaining part of an extraordinary whole.

I wanted this piece to capture that feeling.

Rather than stepping back to portray the cathedral in its entirety, I chose an upward perspective that places the viewer close to the architecture, where the immense scale and intricate façade become the subject. The angle allows the building to push beyond the edges of the composition, suggesting that there is still more than the eye can contain.

The distinctive green, white, and rose marble of the Duomo gave me an incredible palette to work with. I heightened those colors and allowed the deep shadows, warm stone, flashes of gold, and cool turquoise greens to move across the surface in expressive, impressionistic strokes. Above it all, the brilliant blue Florence sky provides a striking simplicity against the complexity below.

What fascinated me most was the contrast: centuries-old architecture that feels solid and monumental, yet a façade so richly patterned that it seems almost alive with movement.

With Duomo di Firenze, I wanted to express not simply what this remarkable place looks like, but what it feels like to stand beneath it, look up, and realize that your eyes cannot possibly absorb everything at once.

In this Jordan River Temple painting, I wanted to capture what has always drawn my attention to the temple: its tall, soaring spire. When viewed directly from the east, however, I think some of the majesty of the temple can be lost without the perspective of the surrounding landscape.

I chose to photograph and then paint the temple from a lower, southeastern perspective, where the trees create a natural canopy around it. This view is more my style, allowing the temple to become part of its surroundings rather than appearing isolated from them.

The brilliant blue summer sky, deep green leaves, and sunlight filtering through the trees all came together to frame the temple and add to the grandeur of the scene.

Taylorsville Utah Temple grew out of my love for temples and the different ways their architecture interacts with the landscape around them. Temples always capture my attention, but this one presented an interesting challenge. Because it's relatively new, it doesn’t yet have the large, mature trees that frame many other temples.

As I walked around the grounds, I began paying more attention to the lower vegetation, particularly the flowers around the temple. I found a vantage point close to the ground that allowed me to use the garden itself to frame the building. From this perspective, the flowers and broad leaves rise into the composition and draw the eye upward toward the temple and its spire.

In this finished piece, I pushed the color and texture of the garden and sky while allowing the lighter stone of the temple to stand at the center. The deep foliage and brilliant red flowers create a strong foreground, while the movement of the blue and white sky gives the temple a sense of openness and space.

Brigham City Temple began with a photograph taken on a beautiful summer day. I was drawn by the way the temple rose above me, was framed by the trees, and was totally encompassed by an almost impossibly blue sky.

The sunlight was striking. As it filtered through the leaves, it illuminated the stone, and seemed to lead my eye upward toward the Angel Moroni. I love the contrast between the warmth of the sunlit foliage and the brilliant blues of the sky and windows.

I wanted to preserve that feeling of standing there and looking up. The trees aren't simply a frame for the temple, they're part of the moment, surrounding the architecture with color, movement, and life while allowing it to remain the unmistakable focus.

For me, Brigham City Temple captures something both majestic and peaceful. It has a commanding presence, yet there is a warmth and serenity to the scene that invites you to stay.

- Image: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0674/8933/3456/files/OquirrhMountainTemplelandscape.webp (copyrighted artwork, do not republish)

Oquirrh Mountain Temple began with a photograph I took during a spring visit to the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The temple is a stunning edifice, but what struck me that day was its sense of peace. I chose a perspective that allowed the architecture to become part of its surroundings rather than simply dominate them. The Temple blends into the landscape, yet remains forcefully present—quiet, luminous, and impossible to overlook.

Through digital painting, I emphasized that relationship between the structure and the natural world around it. Spring color, vegetation, light, and architecture move together throughout the composition, softening the boundaries between them while allowing the temple to retain its unmistakable presence.

For me, Oquirrh Mountain Temple is about presence without intrusion. It is a place of strength and permanence, but also of stillness and peace—a sacred structure that seems both set apart from and completely at home within the landscape.

Cotton Candy Skies began with a photograph taken along the Tennessee River as a summer storm transformed the sky into something extraordinary. Layers of pink, lavender, blue, and violet stretched across the horizon, their softness almost at odds with the unsettled weather that created them.

What caught my attention was that contradiction. The sky was dramatic and turbulent, yet there was an unexpected serenity in the color and in the way the light settled across the clouds. For a brief moment, the storm wasn't something threatening. It was beautiful.

Through digital painting, I amplified the color, light, and atmosphere I experienced that evening, allowing the landscape to move beyond the original photograph. The softness of the sky plays against the darker forms and carries the color and light throughout the composition.

Cotton Candy Skies is about those fleeting moments when nature changes our perception of what we're seeing. A storm becomes beautiful. Darkness gives color its intensity. And something familiar becomes extraordinary simply because the light has changed.

Disheveled Muse began with a photograph of my wife on a beach in Hawaii. Her dark, lightly highlighted hair had been tousled by the wind, falling freely around her face and shoulders. There was something beautifully unguarded about the moment.

As I began working on this piece of art, I became less interested in creating a traditional portrait and more fascinated by the movement, shape, and disorder of her hair. It became the focal point of the piece, while her features softened into the larger composition.

Through digital painting, I pushed the original photograph toward abstraction, breaking the scene into bold shapes and expressive color. The sky and beach begin to lose their boundaries, with tones from the landscape flowing into the figure until skin, sand, light, and atmosphere seem almost inseparable.

There is beauty in Disheveled Muse, but not the polished or carefully arranged kind. It is beauty caught off guard—windblown, imperfect, and completely at ease in its surroundings.

Castle Beach Sunrise began before dawn on a secluded beach on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, where I would sometimes arrive as early as 4:45 in the morning, searching for the place where the first light would meet the water just right.

The original photograph captured one of those mornings: deep blues and violets giving way to incandescent gold and orange, the rising sun spilling across the ocean and catching in the foamy tide. I was drawn to the contrast—the softness of the morning light against the intensity of the color, and especially the way the light seemed to dance across the moving water.

Through digital painting and mixed-media techniques, I intensified what I experienced in that moment rather than simply reproducing what the camera recorded. The result is both dramatic and peaceful, with the viewer drawn into the water and toward the light beyond.

Created during an especially busy and chaotic period of my life, Castle Beach Sunrise remains deeply personal to me. It captures something I went looking for in those quiet hours before sunrise: a moment when everything seemed to become still, and light took over.

This artwork is offered as a variable open edition canvas, individually hand-embellished and completed by the artist.
